How To Layer Your Skincare Products!

If you read nothing else, the golden rule of skin care layering is apply THINNEST to THICKEST. Why? The lighter weight the product, the faster it absorbs into the skin.  Who knew? We did!

Ever wondered what order to put your skincare products on your face? Below is my sample morning and evening skincare routine to show you how I layer everything, along with favorite products! I personally believe less is more when it comes to skincare, so feel free to adapt this to your daily life. Also, applying your skincare products to damp skin will allow for much better absorption of your skincare products. The goal is to begin applying your skincare within 60 seconds of cleansing. You can also incorporate a hydrating facial mist to dampen the skin prior to application.

Here we go!

Morning:

  • Cleanse. I currently use: Brightening Facial Wash

    • Tips —

If you are prone to dryness don’t wash your face in the morning and just splash with water

If you are oily or prone to breakouts I recommend washing your face in the morning

  • Tone. I use Barefaced Toning Pads II

  • Serum. Vitamin C should go on the skin first before any other serum. Take the Vitamin C quiz here to see what kind works for you!

  • Eye cream - I am currently using this eye cream in the morning because it is hydrating and full of antioxidants. If you use prescription strength hydroquinone, like Obagi Clear, you would apply it after eye cream.

  • Moisturize/SPF. I use Barefaced Tinted Protection as my moisturizer and SPF combo. 2 in 1!

    • For many people an additional moisturizer is unnecessary, so you do you.

Evening:

TIP: Double cleanse at night! Use your cleanser twice, micellar water or a cleansing oil (your preference)

  • Cleanse. I currently use: Brightening Facial Wash which buffs away dead skin cells to reveal softer, more hydrated skin.

  • Tone. Toner is great for ph balancing the skin, improves absorption of skincare products, and preps the skin for the products to follow. I currently use Barefaced Toning Pads II which are full of acids and antioxidants that help prevent breakouts and provide a gentle exfoliation (if you’re prone to dryness only use the Barefaced Toning Pads once/day in the morning.)

  • Serum. Vitamin C should go on the skin first before any other serum.

  • Eye Cream: I use DEJ Eye Cream as my eye cream at night. If you’re looking for additional benefits try this eye cream trick! If you don't want to spend money on an eye cream, either Vaseline or Aquaphor are great hydrating night options.

  • If you use prescription strength hydroquinone, like Obagi Clear, you would apply it after eye cream.

  • Retinoids. Don’t skip this one. Here you can read more about what retinoids are and how to use them!

  • Moisturizer/Facial Oils. I always use a moisturizer with retinoids and I currently use: Barefaced Hydrating Lotion.

Masks/At home treatments:

  • If you incorporate masks/at home treatments into your regimen, just make sure you wash your face prior to the treatment.

That’s it! If it seems like a lot, don’t worry — each of these steps can take seconds to execute. Invest in your skin and years down the road, you’ll be so glad you did!
